Family Day weekend is a beautiful reminder of the strength and warmth we find in our loved ones. More families are embracing the ancient Eastern tradition of multigenerational living, fostering shared wisdom, mutual support, and a deeper sense of belonging. In a fast-moving world, these connections ground us, enriching our lives in the most meaningful ways.
A great way to make this work is with additional dwelling units (ADUs)—also known as granny flats, mother-in-law suites, or carriage houses. I like to call them Tiny Retreats—because even small spaces deserve to feel special. Thoughtful design transforms them into luxurious sanctuaries, just like our Luxe Small Space project last year.
We believe that every small space has the potential to feel grand with the right design approach. By blending smart space planning, thoughtful colour palettes, layered textures, and multi-functional elements, we create ADUs that feel both luxurious and inviting. LET IN LIGHT
In a small space, larger windows create the illusion of openness, allowing the eye to travel further into the distance.
Natural light enhances this effect, making any space feel airy and expansive. Not only does it offer a beautiful view of the outdoors—easily shielded by the right window coverings when needed—but it also visually opens up the room.
To amplify this effect, consider placing large mirrors opposite windows or in darker corners. We’ll guide you in flooding your ADU with light while balancing privacy through thoughtful window treatments and finishes.

DREAM IT UP
Creative space planning is crucial to your ADU design, one that feels both functional and expansive. Small space designs must be multi-functional for optimized use of space.
Consider adding a vaulted ceiling to create an airy, spacious feel, while also allowing space for a loft or partial loft. Lofts are versatile—they can serve as a home office, an extra bedroom, or convenient storage. If vaulted ceilings aren’t an option, a designer can create the illusion of height with strategic colour choices that enhance depth and openness.
Thoughtful colour-blocking can define focal points without adding visual clutter. To maintain an airy feel, choose neutral or monochromatic furniture and introduce pops of color through decor, throw pillows, and area rugs.

Thoughtful planning of size, placement, and exterior finishes allows the unit to blend seamlessly with your lot and landscape. While some homeowners prefer an exact colour match to their main house, I always recommend complementary or inverse palette.
Your ADU’s exterior offers room for creativity, but a designer will also navigate local regulations, ensuring compliance with any requirements for matching your main home’s aesthetic.
